What it is
E464 is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), made by treating plant cellulose with propylene oxide and methyl chloride.
Why it matters
Gluten-free bakery binder, edible film former, and the basis of most "vegetarian capsule" pharmaceutical shells (a vegan alternative to E441 gelatin capsules).
