What it is
E171 is titanium dioxide, a brilliant-white mineral pigment.
Why it matters
Historically used as the white in icing, chewing gum, soft cheeses, and confectionery. Banned as a food additive in the EU since August 2022 over safety concerns; still permitted in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
What to do
Always vegan. Will only appear on UK food labels in non-EU imports or pre-ban stock.
